BIT 405 Business Intelligence II (3 Cr.)

This course is about Business Intelligence (/Decision Support) Systems (BI/DSS). These are computer-based information systems that assist managers in their decision making. The reason that the course topics are critical is that ALL management information systems are supposed to support managerial decision making in some way. This course will examine technologies on the forefront in Business Intelligence. Topics may include Business Performance Management (BPM), Business Activity Monitoring (BAM), Data Mining and Customer Relations Management (CRM), Web Analytics and XML. Specific DSS technologies include DSS (in general), data warehousing, on-line analytical processing (OLAP), data mining, Group (Decision) Support Systems (GSS), decision rooms, other forms of collaborative computing, knowledge management (KM), electronic commerce (EC), Internet development and use for decision support (Web Intelligence / Web Analytics / Web Mining), Executive Information Systems (EIS), Everybody's Information System (EIS), Enterprise Information Systems (EIS), Enterprise Resource Management (ERM) Systems / Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Systems, Customer Relationship (or Resource) Management (CRM) systems, Supply Chain Management (SCM) systems, Product Life-cycle Management (PLM) systems, Business Process Management (BPM) systems, Business Activity Monitoring (BAM) systems, expert systems (ES), artificial neural networks (ANN), genetic algorithms (GA), fuzzy logic (FL) and intelligent agents (IA).

 

BIT 410 Software Engineering II (3 Cr.)

Explores the principles of software design in detail, with an emphasis on software engineering aspects. Includes exposure of software lifecycle activities including design, coding, testing, debugging, and maintenance, highlighting how design affects these activities. Peer reviews, designing for software reuse, CASE tools, and writing software to specifications. Continuation of study of the software lifecycle. Methods and tools for the implementation, integration, testing and maintenance of large, complex software systems. Program development and test environments. Group laboratory project. Technical presentation methods and practice. Ethical and societal issues in software engineering.

 

BIT 415 E-Commerce I (3 Cr.)

This course provides an understanding of the evolving Internet based commercial activities around the world and how individual organizations can benefit from that. Students will learn about the opportunities and benefits in selling via the web; market potentials and revenue growth rates; typical e-commerce configurations; business to consumer and business to business interactions; steps in going for online marketing; developing web pages; integration of e-commerce with existing business systems and databases; purchasing online; marketing offline; measuring results; security issues; etc.

 

BIT 480 Internship II / Report (3 Cr.)

BIT 490 Project (6 Cr.)

Graduation project (Computer application): This course provides the student with an opportunity to develop a topic in the Business/IT field under the direction and supervision of a faculty member. A project proposal will be submitted to and approved by the faculty member. Upon completion of the project, the student will prepare a written management report and an oral presentation on the results of the project. The focus of this course will be on the reinforcement of the critical thinking skills that are necessary for managerial success in the Business /It environment. Students will apply the knowledge they have gained in the prior courses of the Business / It program to identify problems, to evaluate solutions and alternatives, to synthesize recommendations, to successfully communicate and present their ideas, and to understand the process of reaching a winning solution.

 

BIT 505 Advanced Database Management System (3 Cr.)

A major database system implementation project realizes the principles and techniques covered in earlier courses. Students independently build a complete database management system, from file structures through query processing, with a personally designed feature or extension. Lectures on project details and advanced techniques in database system implementation, focusing on query processing and optimization. Guest speakers from industry on commercial DBMS implementation techniques. A wide range of topics such as query processing and optimization, object-oriented database systems, distributed database systems, database warehousing and data mining will be discussed. The course will also be used to introduce emerging issues related to database systems.

 

BIT 510 Advanced Object Oriented Programming (3 Cr.)

Object-oriented programming techniques and issues, emphasizing programming as modeling and simulation. Topics: large-scale software development approaches, encapsulation, use of inheritance and dynamic dispatch, design of interfaces and interface/ implementation separation, exception handling, design patterns, mini-malizing dependencies and value-oriented programming. The role of programming conventions/style/restrictions in surviving object-oriented programming for class libraries, frameworks, and programming-in-the-large; general techniques for object-oriented programming. The evolution of object-oriented programming is traced from its early implementations to modern programming languages which include objects. Comparisons between competing systems will be discussed. Emphasis will be placed on the practical application of object-oriented concepts to business programming problems. Use of an object-oriented language will be required.

 

BIT 515 Network & Telecommunications in Business (3 Cr.)

Introduction to computer network architecture and methods for programming network services and applications (e.g. DNS, Email and MIME, http, SNMP, multimedia). Wired, wireless, and satellite network architectures. OSI protocol model, with an emphasis on upper layers. Congestion control, quality of service, routing, Internet protocol suite (e.g. IP, TCP, ARP, RARP). Server design (e.g. connectionless, concurrent). Network programming abstractions (e.g. XDR, remote) communications in business. Topics include the benefits, costs, and risks of using computer networks, network design issues, and special considerations for network applications. This course will require routine use of the campus network and software to aid in network design and evaluation. Simulation and optimization will be used as tools for network design and evaluation. Study of advanced concepts and techniques for distributed computer networking and data communications in business. Topics include languages such as Java which have been developed for distributing applications, object sharing and brokering within a distributed environment, operating systems for networked applications, network security, and distributed applications.
